The Sexual Assault Section of the Investigations Bureau is responsible for the investigation of any type of sexual assault, sexual battery, or incest involving a victim 18 years of age or older. The San Francisco Sexual Assault Section is part of a multi-agency Response Team whose goals include safety and protection of the victim and the prosecution of the suspect.

Rape Treatment Center at ZSFG Emergency Department
Rape Treatment Center (RTC) provides medical services for acute (less than five days) sexual assault out of the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) Emergency Department. Our clinicians at the Trauma Recovery Center (TRC) also provide ongoing supportive mental health services.
Medical services for clients who have been sexually assaulted are provided at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) Emergency Department by a nurse practitioner of physician assistant forensic specialist from TRC/RTC. Learn about our medical forensic team here.
Survivors of sexual assault can choose to receive any and/or all of the following services at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) Emergency Department. Staff will explain all of your options and support you through the process.
Survivor options available at the Emergency Department include:
- physical examination
- treatment for sexually transmitted infections
- forensic evidence collection
- coordination with law enforcement
- linkage with ongoing support services
