San Francisco Women Against Rape trains volunteers to be CA Certified Rape Crisis Counselors three times a year. Our next training begins in September 2010. Applications for this training are due August 1st. Our trainings last for approximately 8 weeks, on Mon & Wed evenings 5:30-9pm and Sats 9:30am-5:30pm. We accept applications year round.
Native speakers of languages other than English volunteers are needed to provide Multi Lingual Access to services. $100 Stipend paid upon completion of MLAM training. Additional $50 stipend is paid upon providing your first MLAM accompaniment or in-person counseling session. $18-20/hr is paid for services provided in languages other than English.
Women* of color who are trans or queer, Young women who are 20 years old or younger, Latina women who are immigrants, women who are elders, women who live in an SRO/who are marginally housed, and women who have been in jail or prison are strongly encouraged to apply. If you are under 18, we will need guardian/parental consent for your application. We have volunteer opportunities available in these areas:
* SFWAR's understanding of the construct "woman/women" extends beyond a biological one. This means that SFWAR also supports and prioritizes the leadership of transgender, gender variant, intersex and gender non-conforming people.

Counseling Program
- Peer Counseling: Peer counselors staff the 24-hour hotline, conduct in-person counseling sessions, facilitate support groups, and accompany survivors to SFGH.
- Community Outreach: Volunteers give presentations at schools, table at events, street outreach, distribute our materials to community centers, and keep our outreach center up to date.
- Special Events: Volunteers work on SFWAR special events like Walk Against Rape and Artists Against Rape.
- Grassroots Fundraising: Volunteers organize house parties, sidewalk sales and other community fundraisers to support SFWAR.
- Databases: Volunteers help us keep our databases up to date.
- Mailings: Volunteers help with mailings we send out a few times a year.
- Special Projects: Projects come up throughout the year.

Qualifications: Experience with and/or ability to: work well independently and within a team; complete basic office administrative tasks; be flexible; communicate well; learn and support others in developing a radical political analysis as the foundation for anti-violence, anti-oppression, social justice work; participate in on-going personal, interpersonal and institutional anti-oppression work.

Volunteers are an integral part of the organization and the backbone to many of our services. SFWAR has an average of 90 active volunteers at any given time. Trainings for volunteers, including rape crisis counseling certification, run approximately three times a year.
